1. Are classes held virtual or on-site?

All of our current classes are offered virtually via Zoom and onsite at one of DEAF Inc facilities. Onsite class locations can be varied; please check the location information at this link: https://www.deafincma.org/asl/register

2. Who can register for ASL classes?

Our classes are open to all adults 18 years old and above of all hearing statuses. DEAF, Inc. is a no-voice, ASL, and Deaf friendly zone.

3. How much do ASL classes cost?

The registration fee for ASL classes is $275 per person. Each person participating in the class must be registered. The cost is excluded class materials (e.g,. e-textbook, webcams)

4. What is your refund policy?

A refund will not be issued unless a class is canceled by DEAF, Inc.

5. Can I earn credit for my participation?

Classes at DEAF, Inc. are not for credit. However, participants will receive a certificate of completion once they have attended eight or more classes and have met the instructor’s expectations.

6. What is the difference between casual-paced and standard-paced classes?

Casual-paced classes would be most appropriate for students who are new to ASL and would benefit from activities that would provide an opportunity for practice and repetition. Standard-paced classes are most appropriate for students with a general knowledge of ASL and would prefer an accelerated learning style.

7. After paying the registration fee, when will I receive class instructions?

An email with class instructions will be sent to students 3-5 business days prior to the start of the semester. This is to ensure that registration is closed and that the class has met the minimum number of students required to move forward.

8. What curriculum does the ASL program use? Is it required?

DEAF, Inc. uses a web-based curriculum called TRUE+WAY ASL (TWA). Students may purchase access to the TWA curriculum through a unique link that will be provided with the class instructions. The current cost of the curriculum is $30-45 depending on the number of units the course will cover. The curriculum is the property of TWA and the price is subject to change. Purchase of the curriculum is not required but strongly encouraged for optimal learning. The curriculum provides exercises to promote real-world conversations related to students' daily lives with the goal of students being able to converse with Deaf people in the community.

9. Will there be a sign language and/or voice interpreter provided for ASL classes?

Our classes are fully immersive, so there will be no sign language and/or voice interpreter present. Students will rely on using and expanding their communication skills.

10. I am not sure which level I am supposed to be at.

Please contact us at asl@deafincma.org to request a chat with ASL Program Coordinator to schedule a Zoom meeting to determine which ASL class level will be appropriate.

11. I just missed the deadline for registration, but classes haven’t started yet. Can I still join a class?

If a class is not full, it may be possible to allow additional students in. Please contact us at asl@deafincma.org to see if the class level you want to register for is available.

12. Classes have just started. Can I join late?

Unfortunately, once the semester has begun, there will be no late entries. DEAF, Inc. hosts classes four times a year, and registration for the next semester will open shortly. You can subscribe to our mailing list or follow us on our social media pages to be notified of when registration opens again.

13. How many onsite and virtual classes will be offered by DEAF Inc?

We offer onsite and virtual (case by case) 4 times a year (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer). Each class will be two hours long.

14. What do onsite and virtual summer classes look like?

Any format summer ASL classes will meet two times a week for five weeks (accelerated course).

15. My organization/business wants to host ASL classes. How can they do that?

We offer onsite and virtual ASL classes to various businesses/organizations. Please contact us at asl@deafincma.org for further details.

16. Are DEAF Inc facilities accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes, DEAF Inc facilities are accessible for wheelchair users with elevators and ramps available to access the office on any floor.

17. I would like to purchase a class as a gift for someone else. Are there gift certificates available?

For Limited Time: ASL 2024 Summer Classes for Children (Age 9-12)

Is your child 9-12 years old and wants to learn ASL? We have the perfect opportunity for them!

Our virtual ASL 1 class is taught by Syd Ahmed, a Deaf instructor with experience teaching children. The class runs from July 10th to the 31st. Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 PM EST. Registration ends on July 2nd.
